Not all carbon is created equally. Everwaters' activated carbon is made from coconuts - the shells are crushed and steamed at 600 - 1200 °C. The next part is key. The carbon is infused with charged particles that target and reduce lead. No plastic resin needed, just all-natural coconut carbon!
The ceramic element is also key. Not only does it reduce bacteria and cysts by 99.9999%, it also slows the flow down, allowing the carbon to work harder. In the water industry, we call it increased contact time. The water spends more time in contact with the carbon as it flows through the filter, which is the reason Everwaters' filter reduces so many contaminants.
First, please wash your hands, and avoid contamination of any component, especially those in contact with clean, filtered water. Then, remove the cartridge and scrub the ceramic surface with a clean scrubbing pad while making sure that the nozzle, which is where the clean water comes out of, remains uncontaminated. The rest of the components can be cleaned with soap and clean water. If no clean water is available, you can use a household cleaner. Make sure, however, that you are using a household cleaner meant for plastic.
The max flow rate is about one liter per hour, and depending on how full the outer container is, it should filter between four to six liters overnight. If you're concerned it's too slow, there are a couple of reasons your flow rate has slowed down. If you just started using it, allow several minutes for the pores of the filter to soak, and then you should see it start to flow. Next, in general, the filter has a max flow rate of just under one liter per hour. Fill it up before bed, and you'll have around five liters of water in the morning. Why does it take so long? It's the ceramic element. It works harder, so it takes longer. The filter is able to reduce many more contaminants more effectively because of the slower flow. As a result, you are getting better water since more contaminants are trapped in the activated carbon. Slow and steady wins the race.
All of the plastic components are made from BPA-free polypropylene (number 5), known for its durability and versatility. The filter element is made of natural ceramic and coconut carbon.
There may be some fine carbon particles or manufacturing dust that comes out of the filter the first time you use it. We suggest throwing away the first batch of water after filling up the receptacle and letting it filter overnight. Afterward, filter until the water appears clear, and you are ready to drink.
Fill to the fill line, and you will never spill. The filter is powered by gravity, and if the water level in the receptacle isn't above the fill line, there's no pressure to drive it to overflow.
The filter element life is 1500 liters, which will last about a year. If you are using filtered water for other than drinking, such as cooking and cleaning, you may need to replace the filter element sooner. We suggest monitoring approximately how much you fill the receptacle every day to use as a more accurate estimate of when you need to replace your filter element.
